Reading an e-invoice .xml.p7m

Open a signed Italian XML invoice, understand its fields and attachments, and keep a readable PDF separate from the original document.

An invoice ending in .xml.p7m is not a broken PDF. The name usually identifies an XML document inside a signed envelope. Reading it involves two different steps: extracting the content, then presenting the invoice fields in an understandable layout. Extraction gives you access to the document. Rendering makes names, line items and amounts easier to consult without reading the XML code itself. Neither step should be confused with checking the invoice’s tax treatment or delivery status.

Understand the Italian terms

FatturaPA is the structured format used for Italian electronic invoices. XML organises information into elements and attributes that software can recognise. SdI means Sistema di Interscambio, the system that handles electronic invoice transmission under the applicable rules. Opening a local file does not query SdI. It cannot establish that an invoice was accepted by that system or correctly delivered to its recipient.

P.IVA means partita IVA, an Italian VAT identifier that may appear beside the supplier or customer name. A reader displays the identifier found in the XML. Displaying it does not automatically verify a business’s identity or tax position. Understanding the document means keeping its visible fields separate from the administrative or accounting checks your organisation may need to perform before relying on them.

Open the signed envelope

Choose the .xml.p7m file in the reader or drop it onto the page. Extraction and invoice rendering take place in your browser without sending the document to the server. The reader identifies the content from its actual data. The filename alone is not enough to establish that the extracted document is a supported FatturaPA invoice, even if the extension looks familiar.

There may be several signature layers, which remain separate in the technical details. Certificate and revocation information concerns the signature on the original content. The readable invoice is a representation of those source fields. If the content is not a supported invoice, the app should not present it as a successfully interpreted invoice simply because its filename ends with .xml.p7m.

Read the fields and totals

The readable view organises available header information, parties, line items, VAT summaries and payment details. Check the number, date and document type. A credit note can look similar to an ordinary invoice while describing a different transaction. If one file contains several invoice bodies, review all of them rather than stopping after the first visible page or the first set of totals.

Amounts are shown as supplied in the XML, without recalculating them. This prevents a reader from substituting its own arithmetic for the data you actually received. Discounts, surcharges, withholding or other fields may explain why a total differs from a quick sum of the line items. For accounting reconciliation, use the original data and the procedures required by your accounting system or adviser.

Create a readable PDF

The full preview is free. Exporting through the service requires a license, presented when you download or print. The invoice view can be printed and saved to PDF through your browser’s print function. The window and destination names vary by operating system. Choose the option that saves the output as a PDF file, then check that every invoice body is included.

That PDF is a readable copy of the XML content. It does not inherit the envelope’s digital signature and does not replace the original for technical signature checks. If you need to forward the received file or keep its signature information, retain the original XML and P7M envelope too. Generating a PDF is not a regulated document preservation service, known in Italy as conservazione a norma.

Handle attachments carefully

An invoice can contain attachments such as orders or supporting documents. The reader can download supported attachments in their original format. Compressed attachments remain compressed; the service does not promise to open or inspect every archive. Treat attached files with the same care as any other email attachment, particularly when they are unexpected or come from an unfamiliar sender.

If a section cannot be represented, consult the original XML and any additional fields displayed. An empty visible field does not prove that related information is absent elsewhere. Parsing errors, an unverifiable signature and an unavailable revocation response are separate conditions. None of them gives a reader grounds to invent amounts, recipients or a positive tax validation result. Keep the source when asking another person to investigate.

Consult the format specification

The official portal publishes the FatturaPA technical format specification. It explains the data structure, which is distinct from the functions of a readable invoice view. The general P7M guide provides further context for the signed envelope that surrounds the invoice.
